The Barns
The Stables are housed in a 1940’s cattle barn in beautiful
Greenwell State Park. In the spring of 2000, the old interior
was gutted and a new barn was built from the inside out. Our
barn is now completely wheelchair accessible and is used to
house our program horses and teach equestrian education courses.
Many different sources came together from the community to
contribute to the renovating. The Eugene Chaney Foundation,
an arm of our local Chaney Enterprises, donated the concrete
footing for the barn floor. Eleven horse stalls were obtained
through Darryle Hatcher of Southern States in Huntingtown, MD,
and were assembled through the charity of the Maryland Conservation
Corps (MCC), an AmericCorp Group. Rubber stall mats, an innovation
in horse management, were kindly discounted by Hickory Hollow Tack
Shop in Hollywood, MD.
In the fall of 2000, MCC constructed five additional stalls on the
north side of the equipment building across from the barn. This
run-in style barn is affectionately known as "shed row", offering
beautiful water-views of the Patuxent River to the horses that
live there.
