The Stables

The Stables are housed in what was a 1940’s cattle barn in beautiful Greenwell State Park. In the spring of 2000, the old, decaying and unsuitable interior was gutted and a new barn was built from the inside out. Now the stables offer an eleven horse modern, accessible barn with a large classroom/grooming area, 2 outdoor arenas with lighting for evening lessons, spacious paddocks, over 10 miles of trails, and an auxiliary five stall barn for additional horses with private tack and feed room.

Many different sources came together from the community to contribute to the renovating. The Eugene Chaney Foundation, an arm of our local Chaney Enterprises, donated the concrete footing for the barn floor. Eleven horse stalls were obtained through Darryle Hatcher of Southern States in Huntingtown, MD, and were assembled through the charity of the Maryland Conservation Corps (MCC), an AmericCorp Group. Rubber stall mats, an innovation in horse management, were kindly discounted by Hickory Hollow Tack Shop in Hollywood, MD.

In the fall of 2000, MCC constructed five additional stalls on the north side of the equipment building across from the barn. This run-in style barn is affectionately known as "shed row", offering beautiful water-views of the Patuxent River to the horses that live there.
