Meet the Greenwell's

John Philip Greenwell, Jr. (October 27, 1894-March 30, 1986)
John Philip Greenwell, Jr. was born October 27th, 1894 in Saint Mary’s county. The second son of John Phillip and Mary Estelle Greenwell, Philip as he preferred to be called grew up in a large family of six children. Educated at Georgetown University, Phillip Greenwell was a successful real estate investor and founded the Eastern Outdoor Advertising Company in Washington D.C. following World World I. Throughout his life, John Philip Greenwell, Jr. was passionate about improving the lives of people with disabilities due to an enormous love and respect for his father, who was disabled yet raised a family of six children alone after the death of his wife. Mr. Greenwell’s faithfulness to this ideal carried over to the park. He wanted others, especially those who had special needs to be able to use and enjoy the land as much as he had. Mr. Greenwell traveled quite extensively, leaving virtually no country unseen, yet he was quick to say that of all the places in the world that he had seen, his river view of the Patuxent was the most beautiful and his favorite.

Mary Wallace Greenwell (August 15, 1898-March 17, 19991)
Mary Wallace Greenwell was the next to youngest child in the Greenwell family. She attended St. Mary’s Academy in Leonardtown for grade school and graduated in the high school class of 1916. A graduate of Manhattanville College in New York, Mary Wallace lived her life as companion and secretary to her brother, Philip. Always a supporter of historical preservation and the history of the State of Maryland, Mary Wallace was a member of The Colonial Dames of America, A Restorer of Mount Carmel at Port Tobacco and a Member of The Descendants of Lords of the Maryland Manors. Mary Wallace was the last surviving family member until her death in 1991.
