The Chapel
Consecrated by the Catholic Church, the chapel is
thought to have been a former schoolhouse. The
size and basic architecture is typical of one-room
schoolhouses built throughout the region in the late
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The
chapel’s original location is not known, however,
it is likely that the building sat on the property
close to the public road.
Relocated to its present location by
John Philip Greenwell, Jr., the chapel was used by
the family for private services. It is a small yet
stately structure, with such notable exterior features
as the pierced and scalloped facia boards ornamented
with overhanging eaves on all four sides. The interior
flooring is thought to be salvaged material and the
window sashes are thought to have come from the
original building.
Surrounded by English boxwood and blooming trees it
is a suitable setting for private meditation and
reflection or small private ceremonies.
